DECKING DECK LOK BROCK

With the addition of Royal Outdoor Products, our Building Products Division has enhanced our offerings to the construction industry as well as providing the homeowner with materials for building more attractive, low maintenance decks, railing and fencing. Our experienced personnel can intelligently discuss Brock and Deck Lok vinyl decking, Royal Crown railing and Triple Crown fencing (both residential yard fence and post & rail horse fence). Some of the most common questions about vinyl decking are:

  • Why would I pay more for vinyl decking, rail or fence?
  • How does vinyl compare to composite?
  • How much more difficult is it to install?
  • What colors are offered?
  • Can I get help designing my deck?
  • Where does the lumber come from?
  • What’s the difference between yours and Lowe’s (or any other big box store)?
  • Is there any maintenance at all?
  • Royal Outdoor Products offers two types of vinyl decking. When do you recommend Brock versus
  • Deck Lok decking?

WHY USE VINYL WHEN IT COSTS MORE THAN WOOD?

When you take into account the true cost of maintaining a constantly deteriorating project over the years, the true cost of vinyl is probably less than wood! So it not only lasts years longer but looks good the whole time. Whether your project is decking, railing, fencing or some other outdoor projects, here are just a few benefits of vinyl:

  • Looks good for many years to come instead of constantly deteriorating
  • Never needs painting
  • High concentrations of titanium dioxides mean minimal fading
  • Cooler to walk on than wood
  • Won’t blister, peel, rot or corrode
  • No visible hardware to detract from the overall appearance
  • Not subject to any type of insect damage
  • Knowledgeable design help always available
  • Not slippery when wet
  • Flame resistant and self-extinguishing
  • Fasteners do not show
  • Stronger decking to allow for greater center to center joist dimensions
  • Rail systems are not an “add-on” – and vinyl railing is often less expensive
  • than composite railing Fading is, for all practical purposes, not an issue with vinyl
  • *Overall material quality is controlled better with 100% virgin vinyl than with recycled materials

*Since dark colors absorb more UV rays that cause fading, vinyl is not manufactured in dark colors.

HOW DIFFICULT IS IT TO INSTALL?

A vinyl deck consists of vinyl decking and railing but still has a treated wood sub-structure. The wood substructure (support posts, beams and joist) is built almost exactly like any wood deck. Both the decking (either Brock or Deck Lok) and the railing come with complete instructions. Our Building Products Division staff is here to help with any questions before, during or after your project is complete. From a practical standpoint, if you’ve never built a vinyl deck, plan on it taking 50% longer than a low-end wood deck. The additional time allows for a “learning curve” as well as some additional time for mounting a much stronger rail system and trim. In general, anyone capable of building a deck is certainly capable of building a vinyl deck!

WHAT COLORS ARE OFFERED?

Deck Lok comes in Sandlewood (light tan) or Driftwood (light gray). Brock comes in white, tan or gray.

CAN I GET HELP DESIGNING MY DECK?

Our Design Department is capable of supplying scale drawings and bills-of-material listing all of the vinyl components and the cost for each. In addition, complete instructions are supplied for both decking and railing. Generally, there is no charge for this service since any design charges are credited back when your material order is placed. Under some circumstances, we have supplied the complete permit application package for your building permit. However, a complete permit application package is a chargeable item.

WHERE DOES THE LUMBER COME FROM?

To avoid freight costs, we recommend that the customer purchase any necessary lumber locally.

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN YOUR VINYL AND THE BIG BOX STORE VINYL?

Remember there are tons of “me toos” out there (and more every day). The most common way to impact the market when you’re new is to cut the price – and the most common way to cut the price is to cut the quality! What are some of the things you need to consider about you supplier?

Wall thickness of railing. Remember that wall thickness usually translatesinto strength.

Warranty. Is it really a lifetime, transferable warranty?

UV protection. The big box store probably can’t even discuss things like titanium dioxide and fade resistance.

Complete package. If you don’t want to sweat the details, their “buy our stuff and make something out of it” may be sufficient. However, if you really want to take pride in your project, make sure all of the components are readily available from the manufacturer.

IS THERE ANY MAINTENANCE AT ALL?

Compared to wood, theirs is virtually none. The non-porous surface cleans exceptionally easily and resists stains. Squirting it off once in a while is a good idea. In high foliage areas, consider a light pressure wash every couple of years to easily clean and accumulated mildew. For stains, refer to our Stain Removal Chart.

WHEN DO YOU RECOMMEND BROCK VERSUS DECK LOK DECKING?

We recommend Brock Decking over Deck Lok under the following conditions:

When a customer is building a Floating Dock in an area where the dock is likely to experience significant wave action. When the customer requires a pure white deck or dock. When the 1/8” space is preferred between each plank on a deck.

We recommend Deck Lok over Brock under the following conditions: The customer prefers a more “wood grain” type finish. The customer wants tosave some decking material costs. Existing joists are over 16” on center. Some protection from weather is required under the deck.*

*Although Deck Lok uses a tongue and groove design, it is not at all drip-proof. However, since there are no spaces between the planks, it tends to cut down on the amount of water running through the deck as opposed to Brock which has 1/8” spacing between the planks. Any tongue and groove design will help reduce the possibility of insects nesting under a deck that is close to the ground as they will use any spacing for entry/ exit.

Other than the conditions mentioned above, the choice between the two becomes a matter of taste. We will be happy to supply samples for you consideration.
